Education on the dangers of knives is a major issue with the West Midlands Police.

Police goes 'techno'

West Midlands Police have developed an educational package ‘Tooled up for School” which is specifically aimed at children from 11 years up to 16-year-old.

The pack which was part of an educational campaign called "One knife, One Life" also includes a music video presenting rap and soul music which highlights the devastating effects weapons can have in schools and for young people in general.

The music track and video have been released for sale and have been sent to youths through internet marketing. Clips of the DVD have also been sent to young people by video-phone messaging.

Bev Layton said: "We are trying to get to young people through the technology they use."

The thought provoking educational pack includes a documentary featuring a fictional stabbing along with interviews with families and friends of victims of actual knife attacks.

"You can actually hear a pin drop, they are so focused." Bev Layton

Bev Layton says young people are first shown the documentary following a workshop where the subject is discussed with police officers.

She says the package gets the students attention.

“You can actually hear a pin drop, they are so focused … and it also makes them realize what effect it would have on their parents.”

"Young peple are getting the message of staying safe and resisting the need to carry weapons."

Witness
The music track is performed by rap artist 'Witness' and has been released for sale.

Ms Layton said: "It is enjoyable to see that the package is working. We are more than happy."
