Sea turtles threatened by their ¡°saviours¡±?

A campaign launched against ¡°unlawful¡±activities of the National Marine Park on Zakynthos Island is currently under way in Greece.

An alliance of three environmental pressure groups (WWF Greece, ARCHELON, MEDASSET) published in early of June a press release , in which they are accusing the management committee of the? National Marine Park of Zakynthos for the current? extensive construction works of the existed illegal buildings on one of the major Mediterranean sea turtle nesting sites.

The campaign has coincided with the beginning of the reproduction period of the loggerhead turtle on Daphne beach of Laganas bay on Zakynthos island.

The organizations say that the ecological integrity of the National Marine Park is degrading because of lack of transparency within the Park¡¯s management committee with the Ministry of Environment¡¯s consensus.

Mrs Lilly Venizelou, the President of the Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtle in Greece? said that this weekend the campaign¡¯s representatives are going to reveal in a public meeting the National Park¡¯s management committee a photogallery and footage from the illegal construction works during the last days.

She noted: ¡°The situation is out of control and the issue reveals that we live in a country where laws are totally violated with the consensus of the Minister of Environment¡±.

However, the Greek Minister of Environment, Mr George Souflias, had? stated on a press release that everything is under control and congratulated the Manager of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos for her job during the past two years.
