Constructions continue on nesting beach
Closed to the public remains one of the main nesting beaches of the loggerhead turtle on Zakynthos Island.
Access to Daphne beach is still forbidden by the authorities of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos due to a series of constructions on the area.
A guardian on the top of the hill above the beach informs the tourists that the beach will be accessible when the constructions held by the management body of the national marine Park will be completed on July 1.
However, Mr Sourbes Laurent, who works for the Integrated Planning Department of the National Marine Park, said that it is not known yet when people will be able to visit Daphne, one of the loggerhead turtle¡¯s nesting resorts on the island.
Mr Laurent explained that the constructions are part of a pilot plan, which aims in a better management of the visitors.
He added ¡°It is a pioneering plan because it will include a special observatory, where tourists can watch from afar with the help of cameras the turtle laying her eggs during the nesting period¡±.
But Mr Laurent refused to reply to the accusations of the three main environmental organizations in Greece, who claimed earlier this month that the management body of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos promotes the extension of the existed illegal buildings on Daphne beach.
