Proposed station:

The new reactor planned by Edf Energy, to be built adjacent to the existing stations, could be running by as early as 2017.

However, West Somerset Council recently threw out a planning application for preliminary work.

Jim Duffy from Stop Hinkley, a local group opposing nuclear power, believes the council was brave to stand up to Edf:

The final decision on the Hinkley Point C site should be made in 2011. When Edf began their consultation in 2008, Simon Dunford, project manager said: "We are totally committed to working with the local community from the outset of this exciting project.

"Our plans will provide jobs, investment and regeneration of the community, while providing low carbon electricity for the region."

They say the Hinkley Point plant could provide enough electricity for approximately 5 million homes.

West Somerset Council, Somerset County Council and Segdemore District Council, have all been involved in the planning, making sure local communities' opinions are accounted for.

Anthony Trollope-Bellew, portfolio holder for the environment at Somerset County Council welcomes the new build, but realises it will bring its problems.

He said: "There will obviously be a great increase in local employment, while the station is being built, and then further high quality employment once the build is complete. There's great economical development potential.

He doesn't believe those in the community oppose nuclear power in the area:

Edf have pledged to go ahead with their plans, despite the new coalition government's pledge that subsidies will not be given.
