A watchtower is to be built on the site designated for metro terminal construction in a sanatorium in Taiwan next Monday in order to boycott the engineering work.

The residents of Losheng Leprosy Sanatorium accused the Department of Rapid Transit System (DORTS) of ignoring their concern for construction safety and already designated an area near the gate of the sanatorium for engineering works.

A support group of Losheng has decided to build up a watchtower on the designated site on July 2, the first working day in the month, to impede the DORTS’ work.

“The construction would begin in July and therefore we will assign a 24-hour patrol team at the watchtower in case the DORTS might come and start work anytime,” said a supporter Chu Cheng-Chi.

The residents also complained that neither the DORTS nor the Losheng management cares about the inconvenience caused by the construction.

They will have to take the longer route once the construction work begins next month.

The watchtower is not the first sign of protest set up by Losheng supporters.

In March, a group of bloggers put up a huge robot-like figure ‘Gundam’ in the compound, signifying the supporters’ guard over Losheng.

The Losheng protest began three years ago when more and more concerned people joined the battle against the government’s decision to construct a metro terminal at the sanatorium site.
