Space youth project goes independent

The only lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth club in Bournemouth is now running as a registered charity, according to the club authorities.
The Space Youth Project was managed by the Bournemouth Council Voluntary Support until Space decided to go independent on April 1.
Space has already started to apply for funds as a charity while still awaiting its Charity number which will confirm its charitable status.
The only youth worker of the group, Helen Walsh, said: “becoming a charity will help us to become more independent. We are looking forward to expanding the project and having more paid workers to serve the needs of the young LGBT people.”
However, the group still has only one youth worker and six other volunteers to look after all the activities of the project which is now run by its own panel of trustees.
In the past two months as an independent youth group Space has seen some positive responses from organisations like the Metropolitan Community Church which has raised funds for some of the activities of the club.
“One of the benefits we now have is access to more funds and we hope grant giving organisations will be happy to finance us as a charity”, added Helen.Related Links:
