A new anti-homophobic bullying DVD for distribution to teachers in all London's secondary schools was launched on 4 July.
The Spell it Out DVD pack was launched by Stonewall and Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London at a Stonewall conference, 'Tackling homophobia in our schools'.
Ben Summerskill, Stonewall chief executive, said "This DVD pack is an important step towards tackling the homophobic bullying that damages the lives of so many young people. It's vital that these young people have a safe environment in which to reach their potential and that other young people learn to grow up with a sense of respect for people who are gay".
NHS nurse and sexual orientation teacher in Bournemouth, Billy Clarke feels that such conferences can help raise the awareness about homophobia.
“Since the withdraw of Section 28 of the Local Governments Act, it has been an active interest on our part to raise awareness about homophobia”, he said
However in Bournemouth, there is only Billy who is responsible for the Sexual Orientation programme run throughout the many institutions in the town.
Billy feels that his teachings are being well received by the school children and the teachers and that is very important as a high rate of homophobic bullying has been recorded in schools.
Sexual orientation programmes in schools have become an important part of raising awareness about homophobia.
