Trusts strike against Dons
Supporters Trusts across the country are successfully encouraging their clubs to cancel pre-season games against Milton Keynes Dons.
Queens Park Rangers are the latest to abandon plans for a fixture against the Dons after pressure from trust QPR 1st.
Trust board member Tracy Stent is delighted that the club responded to their feedback. "Wimbledon moved from their roots and for us football is all about community and tradition. It’s something that supporters’ trusts cannot endorse.”
MK Dons were founded in 2004 after entrepreneur Pete Winkleman bought Wimbledon and moved the team from London to the ‘new city’. Dons acting Media Officer Andy Gardner admitted they had found preparing for the new season difficult.
“We’ve had four or five clubs cancel on us this summer and it’s been disappointing. But we’ve got a full set of fixtures now, so there’s no problem. I can understand there are fans who are upset with things that have happened in the past and perhaps the relocation itself but we’re talking about a very small minority.”
Mrs Stent said she hoped more clubs would follow their lead. “If we could have a blanket boycott on playing friendlies at Milton Keynes then that would definitely show a universal protest in relation to what they actually stand for.”
