Friday Night's Alright For Football
One club has rearranged a quarter of its fixtures, barely three weeks after the 2006/07 schedule was announced.
Nine of Chester City’s home matches will kick off on Friday nights, plus away games at Darlington, Hartlepool and Wrexham.
Blues secretary Tony Allen says they’re looking to please the majority of fans.“We used to play on a Friday night years ago and it will allow people who play Saturday league football to attend. It’s an experiment but the general opinion seems to be supporters are delighted with it. We just applied for a group of fixtures and the Football League approved them all.”
Chester City Supporters’ Trust press officer Kevin Jones is optimistic about the benefits of the changes.
“Fans have asked for Friday night games and we congratulate the club for listening. Hopefully the club will respond next season if the idea does not work.”
Exeter City operations director Frances Farley says they prefer a Saturday lunchtime switch.
“We do have quite a few exiles from London who would not been keen on Friday nights. When there are England games we move to a 1 o’clock kick-off and try to persuade people to watch the international in one of our bars afterwards.”
