Linnets take off
The newest supporter owned club are celebrating acceptance into a league for the 2006/07 season.
Runcorn Linnets FC will play in the North West Counties League Division Two.
Press officer Steve Pritchard says: “We’re delighted to have got the new club up and running, have a place to play and now a league to play in. It was vital to get into a league high enough to get the level of support we need to take the club further.”
The club were formed after financial problems forced Runcorn FC Halton to withdraw from the Northern Premier League at the end of last season.
“We feel that the only way to save senior football in Runcorn is to create this new club. Our short term aim is to see through our first season but we’re aware that our budget will be one of the division’s biggest, so hopefully we'll be in the top two. Ultimately we want to get back to the Conference.”
The Linnets are following in the footsteps of supporter-owned FC United of Manchester.
Mr Pritchard says the club have adapted the constitution of the Glazer-hostile FC who last season were champions of the division. “They gave us permission to look at that as well as sharing advice.”
