The person behind Tesco’s GI Diet success is to
join Sainsbury’s, it was confirmed today.
Hamish Renton who co-wrote the GI shopping guide for Tesco’s
stores and advised on their GI food labelling system is believed
to be joining Sainsbury’s in the next few weeks.
65,000 copies
of Tesco's GI Guide have been sold since it was introduced in
January, but Sainsbury’s denies it is cashing in on the
success of its biggest rival.
Amy Cashmore,
a spokesperson for Sainsbury’s, said: “"The scientific
evidence is increasingly pointing towards the importance of low
GI foods as part of a healthy diet.

We have been
working closely with one of the UK's leading GI experts Dr Gary
Frost, Head of the Nutrition and Dietetic Research Group at Imperial
College, London, to identify which products should be tested and
labelled.”
GI friendly
food sales up
The supermarket
said sales of low GI foods had increased since December when public
awareness of the GI Diet began to grow. Green tea sales have risen
by over 30% in the last three months.
Earlier this week the supermarket Waitrose also confirmed a sharp
increase in demand for GI friendly foods seeing a 264% rise in
the sale of blackberries.
