You need support: Haydn and Collette's story

Haydn and Collette Williams have been married for 30 years. Haydn has run his own roofing business for 28 years.

He is familiar with the stress recession can have both on his business and personally on his mental health, but credits his wife for giving him the support and love he has needed to build a successful business.

During the early 90’s Haydn experienced a lot of emotional and mental stress because of the recession.

That stress had a detrimental impact on Haydn’s self-esteem and physical health as he developed type 1 diabetes during this turbulent time.

A strong marriage: Haydn and Collette Williams

Haydn talks about difficult timesduring the 1980's/90's recession.

Collette noticed a dramatic change in Haydn when he went bankrupt. Like most people who suffer with depression Haydn's self-esteem was badly affected, leaving his wife to give him the emotional support he needed.

It wasn’t only Haydn’s health that was affected, Collette describes how they were both affected by the stress recession brings.

It was the support that a strong marriage provides that saw Haydn and Collette survive the last recession, both financially and mentally and undoubtedly the thing that will help them survive the current recession.

Janet Issaac, Director of the Bournemouth branch of Samaritans notes that the lack of such a support network is often why people call them.
