Trees at Losheng also count…

Environmental protection groups also support the Losheng campaign. They claim that many trees in the sanatorium are precious because of their age and species. In 2002 when the Losheng controversy hadn’t drawn much nationwide attention, some people launched a campaign to protect the old trees in the compound. They successfully transplanted some trees in other places such as schools or government bureaus.

Why is it important to protect the trees? Chief secretary of Green Party Taiwan Pan Han-Shen said in an overdeveloped city, green areas are invaluable. “Have you noticed that houses close to any green spaces are usually more expensive? Losheng Leprosy Sanatorium was able to keep its green land due to its remote location. It provides a natural site for people to have a break from the busy city. “
