“Losheng campaign is already a successful social movement because it has made many members of the society express their concern. “

Losheng as a student movement

Many experts admitted that they were moved to support Losheng because of the passion of the students. The main campaign group Losheng Youth has nearly 20 undergraduate and postgraduate students from different backgrounds. Some members of the public question their real motivation however.

What makes the Losheng campaign different from other student movements?

Topic and Participant

Student movement
The Losheng movement is initiated by students.

Student movements used to have something to do with politics whereas the Losheng campaign is for the interest of a minority group. “The group they care about is not even as big as a group of homosexual people. There are only around forty people in total,” said the head of Graduate School for Social Transformation Studies at Shih-Hsin University Huang Te-Bei.

Some people suspect that the students are being used by politicians. Lin Wan-Chun denied: ”We even rejected the cooperation proposal from some political parties.” However Taipei City  Councillor Hsu Chia-Ching suggested: “A few experts that the students rely on have a political background. The students are not necessarily aware of it.”

Organisation and Promotion

Losheng Youth is not a structured organization. They often rotate the position of each member so that everyone has a chance to learn from different experiences. Chief secretary of Green Party Taiwan Pan Han-Shen thought this strategy makes the organisation even more solid. “Everyone can be the leader. If someone would like to defeat Losheng Youth, they’ll have to beat each person in the group.”

Many concerned for Losheng disseminate the information by writing blogs or forwarding emails. Their efforts motivated thousands of people, some from abroad, to go on a protest in April. However a media school student Lee Chia-Hsin commented that the Internet is not the key factor. “It’s purely a channel. The students had made so many efforts before the protest. They had an Island wide promotion tour for face-to-face communication,” she said.

Something that has never changed…

Lin Wan-Chun admitted that she almost missed all school sessions this term. Most students also need to worry about their families. “Some wear masks when going on a protest because they don’t want to be recognised,” she said. “Some could only meet the very last deadline of dissertation submission because they just couldn’t concentrate on their research.”
