How Religious is UK?

Muslim worshippers in Medina

Britons generally prefer religious leaders not to influence government decisions and have doubts about the existence of God, according to a survey conducted by Associated Press and IPSOS.

The AP/IPSOS poll interviewed around 1,000 people in ten countries – Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, Britain and United States – between May 13 and 26 this year.

Religious devotion was highest in Mexico and United States with 80% and 70% respectively.

Britain scores only 23% and 19% have no religion.

Food For Thought

•  Christian groups cites the 2001 Census report where 76% identified themselves as Christians to argue Britain is a Christian society.

•  However, sociologist David Voas from the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research (University of Manchester) said the “leading” question was the reason.

"The Census ask what is your religion and implies that you have one.

"And it was placed in the context of ethinicity and people think, "well, I'm not a Hindu or Muslim so I must be a Christian.""
