Bomb attacks: Britain would've learnt from Spain and US

The devastating bomb attacks in London on 7 July will change the debates on privacy, security, religion and race relations, observers say.

These include the hotly contested ID card and religious incitement bills.

America-based writer and scholar on world religion Reza Aslan, however, does not think Britain see will a similar rise of Religious Right which he said was “a reaction to 9/11.”

He says today: “I don't think these attacks are going to fundamentally change British society the way the attacks of September changed American society.

“I think Britons have had ample opportunity to learn from the experiences of Spain and the US.”

He cites Tony Blair's immediate comments that the attacks neither reflect Islam nor will they change fundamental British values "as a perfect indication".

Previously Aslan commented: “Once the Muslim menace or whatever you'd like to call it is brought into perspective… Europe will move back to the reform-minded, social agenda.”

However, Reza saw the rise of Islamophobia in the wake of 11 September attacks in the States and concedes time will only tell whether the message resonates with the public.

Four bomb blasts occurred on Thursday morning rush hour.

So far, more than 50 have died and 700 injured.
