Vote to keep abortion time limit re-ignites row

A leading UK pro-life charity today accused doctors of pandering to pro-choice lobby after they voted to keep the current upper limit of abortion.

LIFE's spokesperson Jane Ingram said the decision, which allows abortion to take place up to 24-weeks of pregnancy and taken at the British Medical Association conference in Manchester, “is a great shame.”

Representatives voted overwhelmingly (77%) against the motion “ "the upper limit for legal abortion should be reduced in light of new evidence of foetal developments and advances in neonatal care."

The debate was prompted by new medical technology which allow babies born between 22-23 weeks to survive.

Ingram said there are plenty of evidence to reduce the upper limit, including the new scanning technique unveiled by Professor Stuart Campbell, showing babies younger than 24 weeks much more developed than previously thought.

She adds: “There's also evidence that women who go through abortion suffered physical and emotional trauma.”

She also pointed out that compared to other countries in Europe such as France or Germany (12 weeks), Britain has the highest upper limit.

“They (doctors) are trying to save children in Africa but not looking at their own backyard. Our babies are dying.”
