Christian Voice and Co-Op in bank account row

A right-wing evangelical Christian group who has been asked by the Co-operative Bank to close its account with the bank has branded it “hypocritical” and “not the bank” for Christians.

According to national director of Christian Voice Stephen Green, the group received a letter from a Co-op manager earlier this month, asking them to close the account in light of their “ discriminatory pronouncements, based on the grounds of sexual orientation.”

Green, whose group have been banking with Co-op for three years, claimed they are being discriminated, citing the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “which does not mention 'diversity' or sexual orientation once.”

Green also countered today : ”If you look at United Kingdom today, it's descending into a hell of its own making. As a Christian, we have a duty to speak out about it.”

Co-Op was unavailable to comment, but told BBC t he decision was based "purely on the issue of diversity" and not "on the grounds of religion.”

In a statement released by the group, they said there is “ a pattern” of “politically-correct bully-boys” attacking Christian organisations.

Christian Voice gained notoriety for its protests against the TV screening of Jerry Springer: The Opera and its hard-line stance against homosexuality, which they say is an abomination in the eyes of God.
