The changing man
Even if disaster strikes, we run out of fossil fuels and we have the predicted droughts, Wimborne resident Eric Hawkins will be ready. The owner of an almost completely self-sufficient home, complete with wind turbines and solar panels, he saves money into the bargain, too, last year spending only a few pounds in utility bills.
“We’ve been literally sold the gas boiler into our homes. That industry’s worth about £16 billion, so why would the government support providing people with money to produce their own energy?” says Eric.
“ That’s what I do. I bypass the meters – electricity, gas and water, legally, because I’m producing and storing my own power.”
