Girl on hen night in Bournemouth

night-time fashion and sexualisation

Short shorts and high heels, plunging necklines and cropped miniskirts – it's all hip and hot when girls hit the town in the evening. They might show some flesh, pile on the make-up: it's all part of a game. To see and be seen. To look and be looked at.

But what's behind all this? Why do girls really wear what they wear and are they aware of the consequences? Have YOU ever stopped to think why you dress the way you do?

This website explores the 'sexualisation of society' connected to night-time fashion.

sexualisation defined

The American Psychological Association (APA) defines sexualisation as:

“a person’s value comes only from his or her sexual appeal or sexual behavior, to the exclusion of other characteristics;

“a person is held to a standard that equates physical attractiveness (narrowly defined) with being sexy;

“a person is sexually objectified —that is, made into a thing for others’ sexual use, rather than seen as a person with the capacity for independent action and decision making; and/or

“sexuality is inappropriately imposed upon a person.”
