Police discuss
approach to honour crime
London, July 7: A one-day conference will take place in Leeds to discuss productive intervention and to highlight future action against honour based crime, it was announced.
The conference ‘Honour’ Killing, ‘Honour’ Crime – recognising and responding to the signs of potential ‘honour’ killing and ongoing abuse will take place on July 20 in Leeds.
“This one-day conference will bring together key speakers, survivors and professionals to shape the best possible practical action to tackle honour based crime,” organizer Mike Carr of Nexus Conferences said.
Speakers will be Baroness Scotland, the Home Office minister leading on Forced Marriage, Commander Steve Allen, National Police Lead on honour based crime and head of the Violent and Crime Department of Metropolitan Police, as well as a judge, survivors and speakers of women’s rights organisations.
“One issue will be the police response to different forms of honour based crime, such as honour killing, genital mutilation or forced marriage,” Yasmin Rehman, Director of Partnership and Diversity of the Violent and Crime Department of Metropolitan Police, said.
She said the event followed two international conferences set up by Metropolitan Police last year; one focussed on honour killing and the other one on forced marriage.
