North West discusses
forced marriage issues
Manchester, June 23: A regional conference to raise awareness about forced marriage in the North West of England was considered successful, it was announced.
Lisa Bandari, head of the Forced Marriage Unit, a joint effort of the Home Office and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, said that with about 100 people the conference You have a right to choose in Manchester this week was "really well attended".
Speeches and workshops were held to teach social workers, education professionals, domestic violence teams and people from courts how to support victims.
Main speakers were Ms Bandari from the Home Office, Inspector Yvonne Rhoden from Metropolitan Police and Bhaggie Patel from Barnardo’s Phoenix Project, who work closely with survivors of forced marriages.
Ms Bandari said: “Our aim was to spread the message of our national publicity campaign that forced marriage is wrong, it is an issue of domestic violence and help is available.
“This conference was a good start with some areas where people hadn’t learnt much about the issue before.”
The Forced Marriage Unit was delighted to welcome survivors of forced marriage who had attended the conference and shared their experiences with the
team in private. .....
This event was the third regional conference organised by the Forced Marriage Unit in the scope of their national publicity campaign You have a right to choose to raise
awareness about the issue.
