Environmentalists condemn Blair’s ‘catastrophic
climate policies’
Environmental campaigners condemn the former Prime Ministers ‘catastrophic climate policies’ as Gordon Brown takes over.
After criticizing Tony Blair’s plans on airport expansion, nuclear power and coal power stations, Greenpeace is optimistic about Prime Minister Gordon Brown's green initiatives.
In a statement released by Charlie Kronick, head of Greenpeace's climate and energy campaign he stated, “If he's serious about tackling climate change, he'll have to dump many of Blair's plans for catastrophic climate policies. We're very much looking forward to Gordon Brown being Prime Minister.”
Other environmental campaigners are optimistic about newly appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, Hilary Benn.
Friends of the Earth hope Mr. Benn will carry on former secretary, David Miliband’s attempt at lowering the UK carbon emissions.
Tony Juniper, director of Friends of the Earth said “David Miliband has created considerable momentum in this direction and now it is up to Hilary Benn to finish the job. In this he has a chance to make history.”
Hilary Benn has been known for his devotion in green politics in the past.
In a speech he made earlier this year to Socialist Environment and Resources Association he stressed why Labour politics a priority.
Mr. Benn said, “It’s now obvious to all of us, to anyone who believes in science or evidence that climate change is happening, it’s serious, and that it’s our responsibility.”
