Charting my attempts to be green and make a website!

26/5/08

While making this website I am making a concerted effort to be greener. I’m already doing well- I don’t have a car, I walk journeys under a mile, I recycle and try to buy local. So my mind has turned to taking things a bit further. Vegetarianism has been hailed as a green option…I don’t eat allot of meat, my sister is a herbivore so I’ve gotten used to being creative with natures bounty. But after an enjoyable full English breakfast this morning I am drawing the line at becoming an out and out veggie. During my research into all matters green I came across a sanitary product which claims to be environmentally friendly. I bristle slightly and read on. Without going into too much detail the bizarrely named “moon cup” is reusable, washable and made out of natural rubber. I consider this for a moment- It would be fine in the privacy of your own home but I can’t imagine rinsing the thing out in a public toilet! It's struck of the list on the grounds that it’s a green step to far- alot like re-feudalising the country. I recall a story claiming the Brazilian rainforest is going to be saved by tapping rubber for condoms. Environmental contraception? What next?

Today I continue my investigation into bus provision in Bournemouth. I have discovered that the 4B service is due to be dramatically reduced. The residents affected will be unable to get this bus in the evenings and Sundays, which basically cuts them off from the town centre at these times. Perhaps more importantly they won’t be able to get to the hospital at these times. Of course many people will continue to make these journeys by car- not an environmentally friendly alternative but it seems in this case the responsibility lies with the council’s decision rather than the individuals. I will find out more at a meeting of the Throop, Muscliff, Strouden Park, Townsend and Holdenhurst area forum next Thursday. When I began planning my journey to this meeting I realised that while the 4B (had it been running) would have pretty much taken me from door to door. Instead I will get a bus halfway and walk the rest only a mile not a problem for me- but what about the elderly, infirm and people with young children?
