A Modern Family defends itself.
Trevor Elwell, an Englishman who moved to Australia, and his partner Pete West became minor celebrities in their Australian suburb after the birth of their twin girls, via surrogacy, in India was featured on ‘60 months’.
Many raise an eyebrow at the thought of a gay Couple commissioning a surrogacy in India. “There is a lot of misconception surrounding the issue”, says Mr Elwell.
He said: “Usually when people are critical of surrogacy, I turn back and ask would you have a problem if it was an American woman instead of an Indian woman?
“And the answer quite usually is no and so the issue becomes something else altogether. Quite often people conceal their real concerns in something fluffier like exploitation.”
“It’s just a matter of education”, he says. He recounts returning home from India with the twin girls and finding their doorstep littered with presents and letters of support form people who had caught their story on TV.
Delighted with their first experience, the couple are now eagerly awaiting the birth of their third child this October.
However not everything is hunky-dory. Their decision to have children via surrogacy is still heavily criticised:
