TERROR ATTACKS LOOM LARGE ON GAMES
The incomplete venues and transportation are not the only headaches that stand in the way of the Commonwealth Games officials as they desperately try to construct detailed safety and evacuation plans. In a recent development regarding security, the Indian government was warned of terrorist attacks. The communication to Delhi was sent by the Punjab Police after filtering various intelligence inputs indicating threats from across the border. According to the intelligence report from Punjab, pamphlets saying ‘Khalistan Zindabad’were found. Also, it is believed that around 15 kilograms of RDX is supposed to have entered the country from Pakistan. Apart from the threat by Sikh ultras, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami are being suspected to prey upon the Games. The LeT had earlier carried out the Mumbai attacks in November 2008 that killed 166 people. In February 2010, Ilyas Kashmiri the HuJi commander in Pakistan had warned sportspersons, through an online portal, against coming to India for the CWG and other sporting events.
