Queen snubs Commonwealth Games, Delhi unperturbed

Queen ElizabethVexed by construction delays and security provisions, Queen Elizabeth’s absence at the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG) is the last thing on Delhi’s mind.

While the British media is buzzing with the monarch breaking an almost 40-year old tradition, India is more focused on getting the venues and the infrastructure ready in time.

Chairman of the CWG organising committee and president of the Indian Olympic Association, Suresh Kalmadi said: “It is sad that the Queen will not be able to make it to the CWG in Delhi, but we cannot sit and brood over it.

“Our main concern right now is to get the Games village ready and provide tight security for the athletes and the tourists coming to enjoy the mega event.”

With just 115 days to go, Delhi has a task in hand.

Chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Mike Hooper has also raised concerns about the delays and building targets being consistently missed.

However, the organisers are putting up a brave face. Vice-president of the CWG organising committee Mr Raja Randhir Singh said, “There is nothing to worry! We will put up a spectacular show.”

India is expecting around two million tourists and about 10,000 athletes and officials to throng the national capital for the October Games.

It is not only the mad scramble to meet long-delayed deadlines, security too, poses a major challenge. There are increasing attacks by Maoists and various Islamist groups have also threatened to disrupt the event.

Though India have pledged tight security, anxiety persists.

The Queen giving the Games a miss could actually relieve the Indian government of providing extra security.
