Retouching

When the media refer to 'airbrushing' they are talking about images being digitally perfected. To a retoucher airbrushing is a specific tool to literally airbrush an image smooth. These methods are known as image manipulation that is primarily done using Photoshop, a computer programme.

Retouching, the generic term for correcting and improving pictures, has been happening for many decades, even before digital technology. Pictures of '40s actresses like Jane Russell and Joan Crawford were aided in their glamorous looks with lengthened eyelashes, smoothed wrinkles and highlighted hair.

Whilst nowadays retouching is extremely common in magazines and advertisements the question is whether people are aware and what impacts there are on body issues and self-esteem.

Picture Perfect? has the latest news on retouching; interviews with the professionals, videos and audio clips as well as what celebrities think.
