3. How much money is up for grabs? Olympic boat

This is highly dependant on where you live in the country – what the media have dubbed a postcode lottery. Some councils have more money available than others for sport; for example Corby Borough Council and Broadland District Council have just £1,800 and £2,600 respectively to distribute each year. Kent County Council has around £500,000 and Cambridgeshire County Council almost £750,000. Government funding in Kent is supplemented by corporate sponsorship – drugs company Pfizer and the Kent Reliance Building Society contribute £6,000 and £20,000 a year respectively.

If you apply for a small grant from your local authority the maximum amount of money you will usually receive is £500.

For elite athletes in UK Sport supported sports, a lot of money is available to allow the athlete to focus entirely on their chosen sport. That said, most elite athletes have had to struggle balancing work commitments with training, competition and home life at some stage in their career.
