51% of women were responsible for household recycling a door to door survey in West Swindon has revealed.
130 houses were surveyed in which over half admitted the women do the recycling.
Lillian Campbell, 41, of 18 Saddleback Road says: “I sort the rubbish out in our house because I tend to have more time on my hands then my husband. Both our kids are at university now so it’s mostly just the two of us here during the week. We don’t really make that much waste compared to some households. I do sort out the cardboard, tins, jars and plastic bottles and everything else just goes in the bin.”
24% of households claimed that the men and women share the duties.
Phillip Rivers, 33, of six Ramleaze Drive says: “I always put the recycling out for collection and bring it in. myself and my wife kind of have a deal going she sorts it and I put it out. I just hate sorting rubbish and putting it all into different boxes she deals with that. There are five of us in our house so we have to recycle in order for all the rubbish to be collected but my wife separates it all.”
Whilst just 21% claimed the men were in charge of the recycling.
Carl Montgomery,21, of 14 Kerry Close says: “My Dad recycles in our house. My Mum and two sisters tend to do a lot of the cleaning and ironing etc so me and my Dad are left to sort the rubbish. Our house makes too much waste to get away without recycling as they only collect normal rubbish fortnightly so in order to keep the house clean we have to recycle for the weekly collection. At first it was a pain but now we’re used to it.”
