British Indian to contest London by-election

July 2, 2007

Tony Lit, son of renowned British Indian entrepreneur and proprietor of Sunrise Radio Avtar Lit, has been appointed by the Conservative party as its contender for the forthcoming by-election to the East Southall constituency in London.

Lit's appointment is part of Conservative leader David Cameron's attempts to increase the number of representatives from ethnic minorities.

Lit, 34, is a managing director of Sunrise Radio. He said: 'I'm delighted to be the Conservative Party candidate for Ealing Southall. Under David Cameron's leadership this is a party that recognises people from all backgrounds.”

Cameron, who visited the Southall constituency recently, said: 'I am delighted that we have selected Tony Lit, he is an outstanding candidate. Having worked in Southall for nearly a decade he really does understand and represent the needs of the local community.'

Lit’s first professional position was a department manager at the clothing retail chair Next in 1989 after which he gained significant experience in the retail industry. He was then selected as Commercial Director of Sunrise Radio in 1998.

In 2003, he was made managing director of Sunrise Radio, one of the most successful commercial radio stations in Britain as well as the country’s first 24-hour Asian radio station.
