Rabbi Jonathan Romain describes different groups of people who are more likely to convert: “First-timers, with no previous religion; born-agains, whose latent attachment flares into fervour; denominational-switchers, who move, for instance, from one branch of Christianity to another; and total transferees, who abandon one creed for a wholly different one.” Dr Stephen J. Hunt, reader in sociology in the University of West England, claims that there has been over generations a lack of religious socialisation amongst the general population. “It doesn’t necessarily apply to ethnic communities such as Muslims or Hindu faith communities.” Religion is not taught as it was once. Sunday school and religious instructions have declined, alongside other processes such as the decline in belonging. Dr Hunt says: “People don’t like to belong to trade unions and other associations as they used to, so a few people go to church. Official statistics show a 7% of attendance but I would say is even less than that.”

“We live in a very individualistic society where people choose their different lifestyles and they make more choices, this is a very rationally orientated society”, he said. Religious belief has declined over the last 50 years, particularly since the end of the Second World War and the holocaust, the man seems to be in control of their own destiny, according to Dr Hunt.
