CATHOLICS Director of Catholic Agency to Support Evangelisation Monsignor Keith Barltrop claims that one of the things we lack in the UK is good statistical research: “We need urgently someone to get hold of the various statistics from the different dioceses and see what is really going on we don’t have accurate figures of numbers of people leaving church, joining and being baptised as adults.” “We haven’t even got accurate figures from the churches themselves because they collect figures according to different ways in different parts of the country, |
we need a more standardised way of counting people.” “A group like ourselves which try to encourage Catholics to evangelise would use those figures to stimulate the church to action. We are forced to do our work on intuition rather than on scientific data.” MUSLIMS New Muslim Project director Batool Al Toma thinks some of the figures available are merely speculation: “As far as I am aware there is no data on the matter.” “Based on the last census in the Scottish census which asked what religion you were at birth and what faith you now profess, when assessed in relation to England, the figure of between 15 and 20 thousand converts to Islam emerged”, she has said.
