Meteorologist says UK floods are 'natural'

A senior meteorologist says England’s recent floods are due to the earth’s natural climate change and poor regional drainage.

Dr. Richard Wild, Senior Meteorologist of WeatherNet Ltd., says the amount of rain that England has received is an average occurrence.

Dr. Wild said: “These are natural things, when you get an average you will always have much higher and a much lower amounts of rain that’s statistics for you.”

He also criticised climate change anoraks who claim severe weather incidents are due to climate change

“Because climate change has been in the news so recently it’s on the ban wagon. As soon as we have a heavy flood it’s down to global warming as soon as we have and increase in temperature it’s down to global warming.”

Dr. Edward Hannah, lecturer in climate change from the University of Sheffield thinks its difficult to blame recent flooding on climate change.

Dr. Hannah said: “There’s always a possibility that extreme events can change related to various mechanisms of climate change but there’s a lot of natural variability in weather as well so it’s very hard to tell if any one particular event is due to climate change.”

Recent floods, mainly in the Midlands have already claimed 4 lives, devastated more than 5000 businesses and ruined 27,000 homes.

Hilary Benn, the Environmental Secretary, has pledged to allocate more money to England’s flood defences and risk management to cope with the immense flooding.

Mr. Benn announced to the House of Commons there will be a significant pledge of £200m towards flood defences along with an increase to £800m in the 2010-2011 Environmental Agency budget.

Meteorologist, Dr. Richard Wild, also says changes in weather patterns are to blame
