Biofuel or bust?

Motorsport receives a lot of bad press about its environmental impact.

The heavy fuel use and transportation of cars and drivers is regularly criticised.

How does the industry respond?

Q&A

Deputy sport editor at The Herald James Porteous came under fire from motorsport's governing body, the FIA, by suggesting that motorsport should be banned.

James spoke to Sport's Carbon Footprint to explain his reasons:

● Why should motorsport should be banned?

I don't really think it should be banned. However, surely we must question our priorities with climate change such an important issue. The authorities insist they are taking steps to improve things, but in my opinion most of the efforts appear to be just 'greenwash'.

● Can motorsport lead the way in improving the 'green-ness' of the motoring industry?

This is the argument they use. But the cars still do three or four miles to the gallon. They talk a lot about the benefits motor racing can introduce, but I would like to see some evidence.

● Can the media force F1's hand by refusing it coverage until changes are made?

I don't think it is the media's responsibility but everyone's responsibility to help stop climate change and global warming. Judging by the angry response I received from the FIA and the floods of mail I received from motorsport fans, they feel very threatened and I would say rightly so.
