Gail Foley

    Gail Foley

Profile

Gail began her career at the Express and Star newspaper in Wolverhampton, a renowned training ground for young reporters. After serving a proper apprenticeship, including reporting on births, marriages and deaths, and the women's page (!) on a weekly newspaper, she moved on to district reporting in the West Midlands, and then to the Western Mail, the national newspaper of Wales.

Her broadcasting career started at BBC Radio Nottingham. She moved back to Cardiff to become a television reporter with BBC Wales, later presenting the evening news programme, Wales Today.

She moved to London to report on BBC Breakfast News, and then back to Wales to become the BBC's national news correspondent. She then reported on major news stories on both radio and TV, and presented the Today programme and Woman's Hour. A stint in New York was a highlight of her career.

She then presented both morning and evening radio shows in Wales, before becoming the BBC's first social affairs correspondent and winning a Royal Television Society award for her reporting.

She also gained a Masters in Business Administration during this time, and was appointed one of four Good Practice Leaders in the BBC.

She ended her BBC career as a creative producer at the BBC's national training centre in Bristol. Gail also has extensive experience in education, having served as a chair of governors at a large comprehensive school.

Profile

Since graduating I’ve worked as a Broadcast Journalist across local Television, radio and magazines. This includes two years as News Editor for Taunton Television running a very successful local television newsroom and presenting a live half hour programme every night. From there I’ve managed several stations including, Bristol, Southampton, Portsmouth and Oxford. This has included responsibility for all editorial output and studio management.

I have always been interested in both the programme content and technical route to air. As a true exponent of multi-tasking I would work from one end of the transmission chain to the other - from transmitter engineer to presenter.

Latterly I’ve worked in small Sky channels in studio operations and am a competent director in these fast paced live environments.

An extremely heated exchange with Baroness Howe (then Chairman of the Broadcasting Standards Commission) in a cross-parliamentary presentation at Westminster was a professional highlight. She was extremely critical of Local Television until we explained the training we provided to new graduates.
