ZIMBABWEANS FIGHT FOR JUSTICE

Zimbabweans are demonstrating outside the South African High Commission today in London in order to highlight the civil unrest in Zimbabwe.

They are also presenting a petition urging President Mbeki to take action to ensure the safety of their endangered people from hunger and violence.

The forthcoming elections are taking place on June 27th. An escalation of attacks is deeply affecting communities as they continue to live under the threat of intimidation and fear. Julio Mekki from the Catalyst Urban Trust in London is in constant contact with his family there. "Our people are very resilient and by God's help we will survive”

Food shortages are one of the tactics used by Robert Mugabe as he tries to retain power and guarantee his re-election against his challenger Morgan Tswangirai (Movement for Democratic Change).

Food is a weapon used to control votes since operational supplies from UK charities have been banned to those four million people most in need. Julio is able to send money and can drive in supplies from South Africa."We are fortunate we have transport."

Save the Children is one of the charities that has been unable to support 16,000 families to plant their winter vegetables that are essential for food and income. Inflation has risen at an unnerving rate, affecting day to day living for families. Harriet Ward* from London has family living in Harare and their existence is hand to mouth. “Since mid-May, the price of a 5 litre bottle of milk has risen from $500,000 to $1,000,000. Her children are suffering as a result.”
