Brighton’s Gypsy Myth Busting Duo

Two odd groups came together this weekend in Brighton to fight Gypsy myths and celebrate Roma and Traveller heritage.Brighton Gypsy event

The Sussex Police along with Gypsies organised the Sussex Gypsy and Traveller Heritage event on Saturday at the Brighthelm Centre.

Jake Bowers, renowned Romani Journalist came to the exhibition with his caravan hoping to educate people on the Romani culture. He said, “In schools we may learn of various cultures and festivals including Diwali or Eid but the Romani culture is completely ignored. It is important for us to pass on our culture to our children and help people understand who we are and what we contribute to society.”

In what was a rare event, the local authorities have created a separate department consisting of 48 officers to work in liaison with the Gypsies and society to maintain harmony.

Chief Inspector MaryAnn Sandwell who heads the department says, “The idea people have about Gypsies and travellers may not be true sometimes. Our department is separate from that of the local authority and is dedicated to the cause of helping Gypsies and other citizens and narrowing the gap between them. No other city has a dedicated department like ours and we understand the need for one. It’s necessary that the authority helps them rather than shun them.”

The event saw people coming from various places but for Gema it was a way of knowing more about her recently discovered Romani roots. She says, “My grandparents were Gypsies but my culture was hidden from me because of all the bias and prejudice. Recently I met an old family friend who told me the truth and since then I’ve been trying to find out more about my heritage.”

As part of this month long festival, Gypsies and Travellers along with support groups are putting up events all over the country.
