Police presence in SitgesBilderberg peeks through the door
07/07/2010
Bilderberg has launched a website providing some information about its meetings.
In the past the group has been completely secretive, but the website bilderbergmeetings.org has small amounts of information, including a list of attendees for this year.
Bilderberg blogger Charlie Skelton described the site as crisis management. He said: "The story was getting out of hand and they've been forced to set up a website because of the magnitude of coverage."
The website, which appeared after last month's meeting in Sitges, contains a predated press release from June 3rd 2010.
It describes Bilderberg as a forum for “leading citizens that are assembled for nearly three days of informal and off the record discussion about topics of current concern, especially in the field of foreign affairs.”
Writer Michael Streeter, who wrote the book Behind Closed Doors: The Power and Influence of Secret Societies said: “There’s been lots of crisis recently, and the fact this group meets in the middle of all that makes it seem more important to the media.”
But on the subject of the website, Mr Streeter says: “They can say what the like in a press release but if things remain secret inside it doesn't really matter.”
Some previously undiscovered names appearing on the list include George A. David (Chairman of Coca Cola), Niall Ferguson (Professor of History at Harvard University), Marcus Agius (Chairman of Barclays and non executive BBC director) and George Papaconstantinou (Greek Minister of Finance).
