Unhealthy eating: cheaper way out?
The recession is affecting the government’s plans to encourage people to eat healthy.
The Department of Health says people should maintain a healthy diet by incorporating at least five portions of the fruits and vegetables. Supermarkets like Sainsbury’s have even started labelling foods that count towards the 5 A Day.
But such schemes seem to ignore the fact that these foods are expensive.
Julie Green, a 34 year-old single mother, says the plan is ‘just ridiculous’. “Obviously I want to be healthy but the government doesn’t give me money for that. Good quality fruits and vegetables are expensive. I usually have to compromise healthy food for myself to save up for my daughter,” she says.
The NHS however stand firm in their belief that healthy eating is high on the public agenda. According to the health department, people are “becoming more demanding and inquisitive about their diets and lifestyles” thus pressurising the government to take more steps to help them out.
Kripa K, a student says, “I think the government is making an effort but I don’t have the time or money to be careful. Fast food is the easier and cheaper way out for me,” she says munching on her 99p burger.
