22/06/07 - Compensation for US students falsely accused of rape
A US, Ivy League university has announced that it will compensate three students who were suspended from the institute over rape allegations.
Duke University students, David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann were cleared of the allegations in April after the North Carolina Attorney General declared the charges never should have been brought.
In a written statement released this week the university said:
“it is in the best interests of the Duke community to eliminate the possibility of future litigation and move forward.”
“For these reasons, and after considerable deliberation, the trustees have agreed to a settlement with each student.”
The exact details of the financial settlement have not been released, but the case has prompted fresh calls for defendants to have anonymity in rape cases.
Here, Lord Corbitt said:
“If the complainant women is going to have anonymity then so should the defendant man on grounds of equity.
“I just don’t think that acquittal is enough to clear a defendant man in the eyes of his colleagues, his family and the community in which he lives, I’m afraid, because of the nature of the crime.
