Cambridge Sport Lakes - independent funding in action
Katie Huane is the 2012 Olympic and Paralymic New Project Manager for the East of England Development Agency. On 6th July 2006, she spoke to the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Breakfast Show about government involvement in projects such as Cambridge Sport Lakes:
"What we’re doing with Sport England at the moment is moving forward and looking at what facilities are required throughout the region and then planning to look at developing a strategic framework so to help advise where investment should be going.
"We’re going to be moving forward with the audit and that’s going to be taking place over the next few months and I’m sure at some time later on in the year then there will be that strategic framework which will help the whole of the region and not just ourselves as bodies but other authorities and other organisations that responsible for funding to make some decisions.
"I think that there are opportunities – you have to appreciate there are a number of facilities across the whole of the region that are all looking to potentially gain some funding – therefore there need to be due processes which we go through in order to assess those particular project and where the opportunities lie.
"We’re looking to pull together a lot of opportunities from across the region in order that we put forward to LOCOG when it comes to preparation camps a really strong bid. We’re working towards the launch of an event that’s going to take place in September which will build on the launch activity that LOCOG actually do for the submission of info for people that want to become a preparation camp and a pre-training camp. We are doing our utmost to make sure that there are opportunities for those projects that do want to get off the ground and that’s we’d be delighted for those people involved in the Cambridge Project to come along to that event."
