Mission Possible

In less than a week of regulations being implemented various organisations of immigrant doctors and non immigrant doctors got together in a mission to convince the home office to review their regulations.

Over twenty organisations such as the BMA, Bapio, Royal College of Physicians, BIDA and many more joined together to support the cause of the trainee doctors.

Over 6,500 doctors handed over a petition containing signatures to the Department of Health on 21st April 06 asking the Secretary of State to review the new Work-Permit regulations and provide practical and effective arrangements for those already in the UK.

The motion to review the regulations was introduced in the parliament by MP Austin Mitchell. An early stage victory felt closer as 53 other members of the parliament supported the motion. However some doctors still believe that the positive action is far from home.

The BAPIO, which is the biggest organisation to support the cause of the immigrant doctors, filed a legal action against the government after they claimed that the government did not respond to their earlier negotiations.

Though the BAPIO is an Indian based community group, their involvement in this case has stood vital towards the fate of the NHS trainee doctors. They successfully managed to collect over 50,000 pounds to fight for the case in the court of law. The collection was made voluntarily towards the benefit of all immigrant trainee doctors irrespective of their nationality.
