Sports Centres ‘do what they can’
Sports centres can only encourage youngsters to get into sports says the Duty Manager of Sir David English Sports Centre in Bournemouth, Roland Cliff.
His centre ‘does what it can’ to get kids playing sports but he claims it is ‘up to the individual.’
“We regularly send letters out to schools and do as much as we can to let young people know what they can come and do at the centre. All we can do is advertise.”
The centre hires out the facilities and various clubs will advertise their own coaching sessions. “It’s all kind of self-run in that sense.”
He also says that the sports they run at the centre are determined by the facilities that are available, and it is less down to supply and demand.

“The most popular sports are badminton, football and netball. When I first started working here I was surprised by how many people come to play badminton.”
Netball is not one of the more popular sports in this country, but it is popular at the centre because the Netball Association and All-England Netball put a sum of money towards the development of the centre. “We do have brand new netball courts right now and we are the netball centre of the south coast.”
