Border controls make life ‘difficult’

06.07.07

Romanian professionals living near the Moldovan border say frontier controls on their non-EU neighbour have complicated their lives.

Those with personal and work relations in the Republic of Moldova also support the country’s possible candidacy.

Whilst border controls have relaxed on other frontiers, the Moldovan/Romanian border has been tightened.

Galati is a frontier town situated in the north-east of the country near the Moldovan border.

Local journalist Anca Spânu Tudor said: “Things are difficult in this town, many families have been split apart because some live in towns on the other side of the border, but Moldovians now need a visa to visit Romania.

“It’s not that difficult for Romanians though because they don’t need a visa now.”

But Microsoft trainer Florin Nicolescu from Bucharest said he has experienced problems there that make travelling for work more difficult.

He frequently drives across the Moldovan border for work and has experienced extremely long stops there, sometimes having to wait days at a time before he can pass.

This week the Romanian President Traian Basescu asked for the German President’s support in including the Republic of Moldova on future lists for EU enlargement.

What’s more, the country’s Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu suggested that Romania is now willing to recognise Moldova as an independent and sovereign state.
