Stability takes the floor

15.06.2007

The Romanian Parliament’s rejection of a vote of no-confidence against the Prime Minister on Monday could herald a new era of political stability.

Romania’s political situation has been plagued by controversy since shortly after the country’s accession to the EU.

Following a succession of public rows between President Traian Basescu and the PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu, the President’s party left government and started a vote of no-confidence.

Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, MEP for the South East of England, said the vote of confidence for the present government would benefit the new member state as it will bring more stability to Romanian politics.

“Most new member states are in political crisis; in the EU the highly stable states are few and far between. So, you could say that following the result of Monday’s vote Romania is now more stable than some,” she said.

President of Bucharest's Chamber of Commerce Stefan Popa said: "We need political stability in such a way for us to try to concentrate on the problems which integration in the EU is putting in front of the Romanian people and the business community."

The next full government elections are now unlikely to be held before the end of 2008.
