Are online radio stations the sound of the future? Hip Hop producer, DJ Ghost, seems to believe so.

According to DJ Ghost, the increasing number of online radio stations reveals that people are opting out of paying the growing costs for fuelling pirate radio and choosing to kick-start their own online radio stations. ghost in lithuania

Ghost said: “You will get a lot more listeners on online radio. Your time and money involved in trying to run a pirate radio costs a lot. You need the equipment and parts which are not cheap. If you are doing it from home, you are paying for bandwidth pretty much.”

The artist, who recently stopped hosting the Breakin’ Bread Show on the London-based pirate radio station Itch FM, highlighted that this could be the way forward as it would enable people who are using radio stations to spread their music with a larger audiences to focus on.

Professor at Bournemouth University, Sean Street, also addressed this issue and said that online radio could be the next move for radio. But, if this is the case, it would mean that anyone can start an online radio station. He said that having this open arena could prove to be a danger, in that, “everyone will be talking and no one will be listening”.

Dennis Edwards, station manager at community radio station in Birmingham, New Style, agrees with Prof Street. He said: “There’s a case against having too much choice. With that comes a difficulty to separate the good from the bad and so hopefully you’d think that people would wising up and make the better choices. But you certainly cannot stop the advance of technology.”
