The Met says resources not enough, technology needed
21 June 2007

Tarique GhaffurThe Metropolitan Police have issued a green paper proposing new legislation for security at London 2012.

At a security conference, assistant commissioner Tarique Ghaffur said: “Security and public safety are primary in all Olympic planning. We are working in partnership with the ID and passport agency to ensure them.”

He added: “But we will not be able to police the Olympics with just people. Technology is needed – we must make a technological footprint.”

The assistant commissioner said that in discussions with Home Secretary, he had to stipulate that if skills and technology training didn’t start soon they would fall behind the security strategy programme.

It is understood that the strategy for the Games will involve extensive CCTV surveillance and the roll out of fingerprint and biometric recognition systems as well as extra resource and bag scanning equipment.
