Noticeable cultural split among social networks
Which social network you choose may say more about you -than what you say on it, as pointed out by researcher’s data.
PhD student Danah Boyd from the school of information sciences at UC Berkeley research revealed ‘a noticeable split in the United States’ between social classes and shows a cultural divide between Facebook and MySpace users.
In her paper, Viewing American Class Divisions through Facebook and MySpace: “The goodie two shoes, jocks, athletes, or other ‘good’ kids are now going to Facebook.
“These kids tend to come from families who emphasise education and going to college. They are primarily white, but not exclusively, while MySpace users are made up of the freaks, geeks, and social outcasts.”
Miss Boyd believes that these results show how technology is mirroring divides in society.
Facebook and MySpace give users the opportunity to construct new identities for themselves if they so choose.
Technology might be taking us into a period where the view of the person is no longer applicable and we have to develop new ways of understanding identities and ourselves.”
